Gender-sensitive latrines, changing rooms and handwashing stations.
Good hygiene facilities in schools foster a healthy learning environment, and girls are more likely to attend during their period. Furthermore, children who cultivate good hygiene habits at school can reinforce positive lifelong behaviours at home and within their communities. However, thousands of children are going to school without basic hygiene facilities: over 50 per cent of schools in Uganda do not provide safe drinking water; half of in rural setting schools do not provide the most basic of toilet facilities (such as septic tank, pit latrines or composting toilets); and thousands of children go to schools with no handwashing facilities with soap and water. As a way to inspire healthy behaviours and to keep girls in school, we have constructed 6 separate latrines in 6 rural schools.
